How Can a Sinus Lift Improve My Oral Health?

Dental implants are among the most commonly requested treatments at Cannon Oral Surgery in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There are numerous benefits to choosing dental implants to replace one or more missing teeth. But implants require strong bone tissue to create the secure attachment that makes implants a lifelong restoration.

For those who lack the bone volume or density required for successful dental implants, a procedure called a sinus lift can be a great approach. So we’re here today to discuss how a sinus lift can enhance your oral health.

When is a sinus lift necessary?

A sinus lift is done as part of a bone grafting procedure. This approach helps build up bone tissue in the upper jaw to secure the post portion of a dental implant

If you have one or more missing teeth, dental implants are a great replacement option. Because they are anchored directly within your bone tissue, they provide the same stimulation that natural teeth create, which keeps the surrounding bone healthy and viable.

If you’ve lost a significant portion of your natural bone tissue, a sinus lift creates the space needed for grafting to build up additional bone. It’s part of the process to produce sufficient bone tissue that serves to anchor a new dental implant.

How does a sinus lift work?

A sinus lift is a type of oral surgery. It’s done under anesthesia, so you don’t need to worry about any pain during the actual procedure.

Once you’re numb and resting comfortably, Dr. Cannon creates incisions into your gum tissue to access the underlying bone. He then carefully cuts out a small section of bone, taking great care to avoid damaging the membrane that lies between your bone tissue and the sinus cavity above.

Dr. Cannon then gently lifts the portion of the cut bone, creating a space into which he deposits the bone grafting material. Once he’s pleased with the positioning, he sutures your gums back together to close the incisions.

Next comes a period of healing, during which your body creates new bone tissue within and around the grafting material. The result is a strong, dense area of bone that can support a dental implant.

Some discomfort and swelling are normal for a few days after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain medication can help, and you might be prescribed medications to reduce the risk of infection or manage pain.

You’ll need to avoid brushing the area, refrain from hard or sharp foods, and avoid smoking or drinking through a straw as your tissues heal. The at-home care instructions are similar to those after a tooth extraction.

Wondering if a sinus lift will be part of your dental implant journey?

Replacing missing teeth is important and can help reduce the risk of losing even more of your natural teeth. A gap in your smile can also limit the variety of foods you can enjoy, which can contribute to nutritional deficiencies. There’s also the aesthetics to consider, and many people find it difficult to feel good about the appearance of their smile when they have missing teeth.

Dental implants can solve all of these issues and more. They’re an outstanding treatment that can boost your oral health and keep your smile healthy for many years to come.
